Infinite scroll doesn't just keep you online longer, it makes you forget what you saw. As part of a 5-person research team, I led the UI design for TEN, a social platform that tests whether adding a small friction (reacting to a post before moving to the next) can help people scroll more mindfully, without making the app frustrating to use.
User Goals
The core goal was simple: let people share and read genuine wins and learnings, without the passive, mindless scrolling that comes with a typical feed. Everything else (following people, filtering by interest, saving posts) is standard social-app functionality that supports that core experience rather than defining it.
Business Goals
1. Encourage mindful reading over passive consumption
2. Keep the experience easy enough that friction doesn't feel like punishment
3. Build a positive, achievement-focused environment instead of a comparison-driven one
Features
The core feature is the reaction-gate: users must react to a post (or mark it "not interested") before the next one loads, a deliberate friction point designed to test whether forced engagement improves content recall.
Beyond that, TEN includes the features you'd expect from a social platform: personalised feeds by interest, commenting, saving posts, following/unfollowing, and profile browsing — built to feel familiar so the friction mechanism stands out as the one intentional exception, not just another unfamiliar interaction.

Testing & Results
We ran a controlled study (N=32) comparing our reaction-gate interface against a standard infinite-scroll version, using a memory recognition test to measure how well people recalled content they'd seen.
What worked: Participants using the reaction-gate interface had significantly better content recall, more than double the memory sensitivity of the infinite-scroll group (p < 0.001). Forcing a brief reaction before advancing measurably improved attention.
What didn't: The friction came at a cost. Half of participants found the interface frustrating, and only 19% said they'd want to see more platforms adopt it. Even though 69% agreed it made them pay more attention.
Key insight: Friction works, but it needs to be a choice, not a default. Forcing engagement improves recall, but users resent losing control over how they browse.
What I'd design differently: Instead of applying friction universally, I'd add a toggle letting users switch between a frictionless mode (for casual browsing) and a mindful mode (for focused reading), giving people the benefit of better recall without removing their sense of control.
